Singapore eyes talent exchange and AI collaboration with the US

Singapore and the United States are exploring new opportunities for collaboration, with talent exchanges to attract artificial intelligence (AI) specialists being a central theme in recent discussions. There are also plans to invest in AI training for Singapore employees in the future.

To maintain its position as a “global AI hub”, Singapore is committed to working with the US to jointly develop principles and rules, considering the US position as a forerunner in this field.

The initiative aligns with Singapore’s goal to triple its AI workforce to 15,000 over the next five years. Foreign professionals can find exciting opportunities in Singapore’s thriving technology hub.

“The US is also a leader in AI, and therefore, we are very keen to work with the US to see how we can jointly develop this set of guidelines and guardrails,” said Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong.

In addition to attracting talent, both countries have expressed their willingness to cooperate in developing a set of ethical principles for the development of AI. This collaborative effort aims to ensure responsible innovation that protects against potential misuse.

The discussions are part of the US-Singapore Partnership for Growth and Innovation (PGI), launched in October 2021 to explore cooperation in new areas including the digital economy and clean energy. It is built on the strong foundation laid by the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA), negotiated 20 years ago. Recognizing the changing landscape of global trade, Singapore remains open to exploring ways to modernize the agreement.

Singapore is also actively involved in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity. While trade is important to the global economy, national security and supply chain resilience are current priorities.

Singapore’s established trade network of more than 6,000 US companies positions it as a trusted partner in the evolving global supply chain.

The digital economy was also discussed. Despite its potential, both countries recognize data privacy issues that need to be addressed. Singapore expressed confidence that the US will develop appropriate regulations to unlock the full potential of the digital economy.

Singapore’s commitment to developing strong relationships with leading economies, its safe and stable business environment, and its focus on innovation, strengthens its position as an attractive destination for foreign entrepreneurs looking to start business in Asia.
